That was always Team Sky’s strategy/less-than-marginal gain. (Budget, obvs, not slow filth.)

Suppose as with Man City versus Paris St Germain, it’s also about how you use it. But yeah, budget does help.

Let’s not talk about the relative sizes of salary budgets amongst the counties these days.

The return of Rikki Clarke a few years ago paved the way for Jordan Clark (not quite such a class performer with bat or ball, or in the slips, but still good enough to surprise on the upside with bat and ball). The Roach/Worrall duo falls into place; what Sangakkara and Amla were as senior batsmen, these are as senior bowlers. Their presence creates the opportunity for younger home-grown talent to be tried out, without the pressure that so often frustrates younger cricketers in weaker sides. So Atkinson and Lawes have both had the freedom to succeed. Both are brilliant, and we will hear more of them. It is a system, not a lottery. For that matter, both can bat; Atkinson with violence, Lawes with some class.
