In the same vein, the first time Broad criticised team selection at length in public, someone he trusted should probably have told him that it was great it had gone so well, but he should leave it there.

I do wonder whether the catastrophic collapse of the 2010/11 team had something to do with it having so many key players in it with an interesting definition of team spirit. Not that it’s the only thing that matters, but there’s a good case that four or five of the key nine were egotistical even for professional sportsmen. If a couple of the others lose form, things are likely to fall apart. Too few Cooks spoil the broth, as it were.

Maybe. Although the New Zealand series and most of the Ashes were also in 2021. Root was incredibly good on many occasions, but he also had 15 Tests in which to make scores.

He should have batted better in 2020. Left himself too much to do.

And more in the same vein but I can’t be bothered to type it all out. It’s hard to type on a phone.

Can’t help feeling that at the end of his career, Joe Root will always regret the fact he should have been awarded LMOG 2021.

Four fifties in 2020. No hundreds.

Interesting – was he ruled out based on his 2020 performances (which I can’t remember so maybe that proves your point…)
