Elite clarity.

Others collapse under it. Especially in test cricket, captaincy can often have a detrimental effect on batting, although there are enough exceptions to make that far from a certainty.

Stokes will most likely be one or other of these. As such, the decision to make him captain can only be properly viewed in that light, depending on what happens in the interim, and of course, on other things as well.

You’re welcome.

It’ll kill him in a few years but he might just love it enough to drive both teams forward for those few years.

The way I see it, key has several options for coach but only one option for captain. Maybe it makes more sense to find a coach who can complement the captain.

IMO Kirsten would be a great choice. He’s a facilitator and I think would work well with a captain with some personality (like Stokes and unlike Root)

Agreed it’s how cricket tends to be done but we’ve seen in other areas that the cricket establishment sometimes needs to change.

I don’t see any benefit in appointing a captain at this time unless Stokes is part of the recruitment process of the new coach. If he is then I very much stand corrected and it’s a cracking piece of management!

Probably the worst one for the ODI side.

Not sure it quite works like that in cricket. There are different kinds of partnership, but we’ve just seen in Australia how its sometimes the captain who names (or perhaps more accurately in that case rejects) a coach.
